From Warbirth Wiki

"Constantly at war, the tribesmen fought one another with pitiless ferocity, and only the very strong survived to manhood."

Overall strategy[edit | edit source]

While these units, in contrast to its other peers, may seem apparently powerful with additional attack, HP and a faster training time, using these units however is not as straightforward as it would seem. It is not deniable that Cimmerian Axemen can be used, like any assault infantry unit, to punish enemy siege weapons and storm settlements, yet in contrast with other one-handed axe unfantry, these units have a eserious attack penalty if pitted against any melee cavalry unit that is not from the Balkan region or civs associated with that area. So while it can stil be used to fend off Cimmerian Cavalry, Balkan Horsemen, as well as the cavalry units of the Phrygians, it cannot prevail if attacked by Heavy Chariots, Lancers or Scythian Renegade Nobles. Outside of the Age of Chariots mod chapter, the number of units Cimmerian Axemen can function against can onlly fall, making it especially weaker in the later stages of any game.

Thus, Cimmerian Axemen early on can be a useful rush unit to bring down enemy settlements in short-range warfare, they are easily countered by any non-European civ who has access to any time of cavalry unit. Thus while this unit can seem decent as part of a rush strategy, you should upgrade it to more robust units as soon as you can to improve its survivability and to prevent any catastrophic destruction of your army. This last point is essentially important given that most mods that include Cimmerian Axemen often have deep tech trees, making it easy to acquire counter-units against Cimmerian Axemen, as well as upgrades for the latter.
