As a general rule,

  • Defensive bonus versus Archers and Slingers.
  • Attack penalty versus camel cavalry and elephants (unless the unit is as camel or an elephant).
  • Shock/heavy cavalry has a different set of params.

Light, medium cavalry[edit | edit source]

Light cavalry is fast but weak, thus making it ideal for lightning raiding and scouting. Medium cavalry (usually consisting of camels) isn't as fast nor as cheap as light cavalry, but is to a certain extent stronger - providing factions such as the Arabs some degree of cavalry superiority, using the slightly higher range of their camels to defend against other archer cavalry units whilst using masses of camelry to swarm more powerful units such as steppe cataphracts and lancers.

Heavy cavalry[edit | edit source]

Does what it says on the tin and has an attack bonus versus light infantry (this includes swordsmen and javelineers despite the latter being rather powerful). Heavy cavalry also comes in several different groups:

  • Shock cavalry, has a +1 splash attack thus making it more powerful especially on the charge. Sarmatians ought to receive a charge bonus in addition to splash damage.

Elephants[edit | edit source]

  • An elephant has brute strength and can crush war machines and chariots with ease, but is susceptible to high-powered missile weapons. Slingers can do a lot of damage to these beasts, but crossbows and javelins may be required to defeat more heavily armoured ones.

Chariots[edit | edit source]

  • Chariots are like weaker elephants, except that they are cheaper to build but like elephants enjoy the ability of all-round fire arcs while moving,
