Welcome to WARBIRTH wiki!

Warbirth is a series of three mods, covering a vast span of ancient history, namely from 3500BCE to 453CE - the rise and fall of Western civilisation.

Mod features

Four Thousand Years of History in Three mods

Three different mods chart the emergence of human Metal Age cultures. Explore the pains and tribulations of trying to raise a human community from the end of the Stone Age to the very peak of classical culture.

Mercenaries

Mercenaries are the meat and bones of the game. While they continue to be weaker or outdated versions of UUs, some mercenaries like Gutians, Dardans or Cimmerians can be powerful additions to your armies. Some primitive cultures provide little more than spear fodder and meat shields, but others, such as Chinese, Greek Scythian or Kushite mercenaries are the very avatars of their ancestral military traditions. Equally there is now an Agent system in place:

  • Temples can produce Priests, Shamans and Councillors, while
  • Mercenary Quarters and Sentry Posts are required for Spies and Scouts.

However, in Age of Empires, some factions cannot train Spies - if they have no mercenary pools at the Mercenary Quarters, they will not have access to Spies.

History Like You've Never Played It Before

As far as Rise of Nations and contemporary mainstream pop culture are concerned, various cultures beyond the more well-known Middle Eastern or Eurasian agrarian cultures seldom get any coverage.
Age of Chariots looks at Bronze Age Europe, while Rise of the Ancients features those of the Americas and the present-day Russian Federation, while Africa and Southeast Asia are explored by Age of Empires.

Developmental bottlenecks

Warbirth continues New World Empires’s rush-based emphasis, with cities and libraries being exorbitantly costly. Unlike the latter however, auxiliary buildings — Mines, Barracks, etc — aren't discounted, so expansion is as difficult as it was in ancient times.

Morale and information warfare

LOS in Warbirth is used to represent morale and professionalism. The more highly trained or motivated a unit is, the greater the LOS. Low LOS can lead to problems, such as being liable of ambush or bribery. The highest level of training and indoctrination usually results in a unit that is capable of scouting and spotting hidden units. Understandably the best and most powerful units usually can do so, but ships and Siege Towers will invariably have the most extensive LOS.

Scouts and Explorers are absent from Warbirth. In their place, however are Envoy units, who can gather intelligence either by uncovering parts of the map, or inserting Informants into enemy units and structures. Envoys will also cloak when not moving, thus making them highly useful early on especially when protecting your mercenaries from Bribery.

Mods

The Warbirth family of mods features three "chapters", mainly,

  • Age of Chariots - the standard Warbirth experience, set during the Bronze Age, and reflects its challenges.
  • Rise of the Ancients - like Age of Chariots, but with a new age - the Copper Age - and taking place across the entire world, but 1,500 years earlier.
  • Age of Empires (with Hong Quan Cand) - the rise of classical civilisation, from the birth of Rome to the very twilight of Roman civilisation in Italy and the rest of the West.

A fourth project, which uses the Kings & Conquerors tech tree system, named Hammurabi, can be accessed here.

Age of Empires is now being actively worked on, and has two alpha versions:

  • The TaP version, on ModDB, developed by Hong Quan Cand
  • The Steam fork, which is being developed by Velvetclaw

News

We now have a prequel of sorts to Age of Empires (and its sister-project, Kings & Conquerors): New World Empires: Alexander! play its open beta on Steam!

Work continues on Age of Empires, as I continue to combat the side effects of a COVID vaccine. Rome, along with all siege machines, is the main target here.

We've started compiling information on lower order warships, infantry, and cavalry. And possibly, as well as siege weapons we may need since we are going to be moving forward with the Hammurabi project first.
