Middle Assyrian tutorial[edit | edit source]

Part 1: Taming the Barbarians[edit | edit source]

"It has been 2 centuries since we were made to bend the knee and pay homage to foreigners, but now we stand free and alone. But in order to survive, the sword cannot afford to sleep in the scabbard. For this reason, Assur stands ready, poised for war."

"The Gutians who haunt the highlands of Zamua continue to be a thorn in our side, and have in recent times increased their raids, menacing all of Assur. It is time to put a stop to this. Reassert the power of our great king in this land by wiping out the Gutian warbands and their supply wagons. We have outposts in this region, so they should be a stopover point for your forces first. The king himself has seen to your provisioning, so you have a supply of Wealth to purchase any help you may need in the mountains."

  • Find friendly outposts - mostly Barracks and Towers - around the desert, and pick off enemy commanders and structures to gain wealth to recruit mercenaries.
  • Find the enemy Supply Wagons and shut them down. There are at least 4 tribes in the area, and this is a chance for you to learn how Warbirth's units work.

Mission details[edit | edit source]

The mission begins with a small complement of light chariots, and 3 Horsemen.

The Merc posts belong to a friendly Babylonian faction, the King's Rangers. They are also well-fortified, so the Gutians don't get to them. There are a total of 4 Gutian tribes to wipe out, each of them spawning different units.

  • The first one consists mostly of spearmen, easy fodder for your Chariots, and block the way to the King's Rangers.
  • The second one consists of Mitanni Maryannu - there are too many for your chariots, so you need help from your infantry - particularly spearmen, archers and swordsmen.
  • The third uses Mitanni Shukuthlu - infantry and archers, along with the usual Gutian mercs. Again, your task is to use the right combo of units to take them down.
  • The fourth one is fortified - no chariots, but towers bar the way, and the final barbarian tribe is hidden inside.

Part 2: Chariot Storm[edit | edit source]

"The great king, Assur-Ubalit wishes you to command an expedition to Babylon. Recently, rebels laid their hands on Kara-Hardash, the king's son-in-law, and slew him, along with his queen - the great king's very own daughter. The king has given you several charioteers, with these orders: Take Babylon, and make the killers of his daughter and son in law pay. To complete the deed, you must also build 4 Sanctuaries to impress on the locals what we have done, and to show them what will happen to any rebels who dare defy a king."

  • Assur will invade Babylon, with a small force of charioteers and ships.
  • Capture cities, and build temples in them.
  • Show how buildings work - temples, assemblies, etc.

Once the scenario is complete, Babylon becomes an Assyrian vassal.

Part 3: Siege of Washukanni[edit | edit source]

"With Babylon now in control, it is now time to consolidate our power, and make Assur the power it ought to be amongst all the other kingdoms of the world. Your task now is simple - march upon the Mitanni capital, and leave nothing standing, leave no one breathing."

  • Assur invades Mitanni.
