European Slingers
From Warbirth Wiki
"... Lug cast a sling stone at [Balor] which carried the eye through his head, and it was his own host that looked at it. [Balor] fell on top of the Fomorian host so that twenty-seven of them died under his side ..." —Cath Mag Tuiread (trans Gray)

Overall strategy[edit | edit source]
While these European Slingers differ little from the garden variety Slinger that most factions often have access to, three things stand out about it — the first two being its poor morale and discipline, which give it poor LOS and the inability to be individually selected. The third is the reason why you would want to overlook these, and it is near-dirt cheap, and relatively inexpensive cost.
They may be weak as any Slinger (and also rather ineffective against heavily armoured units, eg Heavy Spearmen or Badarai, but unlike, say the Hurlers or the Spearmen (who like the European Slinger are trained from a Sanctuary), this unit is clearly meant for defence — being capable of being trained in large numbers means that you can create lots of them in no time, and then have them create a hail of slingstones to soften up enemy hosts, short of killing them off en masse. A mix of European Slingers and European Bowmen can be quite a powerful mix of units, until you have resources and/or time to amass more powerful regular or professional units to replace them.
Unit summary[edit | edit source]
- Light ranged infantry, with very good range, but poor damage and many handicaps against various targets.
- Short of Their Targets — While they have superior attack speed and range, Slingers perform poorly if attacking anything else other than concentrations of heavy units -- against which they deal near to negligible damage.
- Specialists — Mercenary slinger units, such as Qala'im Balearim and Sphendonetai Rhodioi often have superior tactical parameters that make them more attractive than conventional Slingers.
