Overall Strategy[edit | edit source]

The penultimate Roman spear unit. Protostatia (Greek, "frontliners") are tough, powerful spearmen who while not as heavily armoured as the Pedites Comitatensium are still more than capable of giving an account of themselves in battle. They are best used for holding a line, especially against the heavy cavalry units that dominate the late Imperial Era game, but are still easily knocked out using long-ranged, high-damage missile attacks.

Overall strategy[edit | edit source]

The penultimate incarnation of Roman heavy infantry, Protostatia are by far the most efficient spearman in all of Age of Empires. They are perfect, with the best armour, weapons and training, but they are by far the costliest unit, so use them wisely.

Notes[edit | edit source]

Protostatia are in effect the Byzantine Skoutatoi in appearance.
