Faction Overview Strategic Overview History

The Garamantians have the Power of the Desert.

Far west of the Nile, and deep beyond the southern reaches of Libya dwell the Garamantians -- a secretive people, dominated by astonishingly vast cities in the desert, each one centred around a mega-oasis with great reserves of water. In recent years, the urbanisation of Northern Africa - spearheaded by the Greeks and Carthaginians - has garnered interest in trade, and now Garamantian caravaans are a common sight throughout the Mediterranean coast, where they trade all manner of precious goods and slaves in return for Greek and Carthaginian wares.

In war, Garamantians hosts can seem primitve — they have yet to take to true cavalry, and their warriors are mainly light infantry who prefer to fight at a distance, using javelins and arrows, but looks can be deceiving — for while no Garamantian force can fully stand against the might of a Greek phalanx or the all-new Roman legio, the deadliest edge of the Garamantian defensive system lies not in weapons, but in weather. Vast deserts encircle the Garamantian homeland, keeping their colonies safe from attack. Only a very wealthy and determined foe can truly take on the Garamantians in their own homeland, provided he first has no rivals. But this is an age of empires and emperors so powerful they seem to be god-kings, capable of doing anything on a whim. Only shrewd wits and clever urban planning may save the Garamantians from historical oblivion, whoever their enemies may be.
