The Bach Viet have the power of the Jungle.

The jungles to the south of the gorges of the Great River (known today as the Yangtze) have been the home of the Viet peoples — whose intelligence and resilience belie the simple tribalistic lifestyles of most Viet people. Despite consisting mostly of hunters, fishers and simple subsistence farmers, the Viet peoples have nevertheless prospered, through their mastery of metalsmithing, and now very much dominate over most of eastern Indochina and the Pearl River basin. And while the swampy river basis regions would be a daunting barrier for other foreign peoples accustomed to driving chariots across hard plains, for the Viet peoples, they are refuges and places of sustenance — to exploit this wealth, the Viet peoples became proficient in the construction of boats and ships, and know how to use them well.

Yet time is running out for these people, known as the "Bach Viet" or "hundred Yue tribes", named so for their lack of unity. Ominous events are taking place to the far north and the west, if the Bach Viet People only knew it. To the far north lie the Chinese peoples, now coalesced around three realms - but of these the greatest is the Shang kingdom in the Yellow River. Shang, while prosperous, however, is experiencing a population boom, and travellers from distant lands tell the Bach Viet of tales of Chinese migrants, flowing westward and south. Some of these migrants have even reached Bach Viet lands, and have begun to settle down, while others have flocked to the slopes of Mount Qi in the harsh western badlands of Zhou.

So far, the migrants have kept to themselves and many have died, being incapable of holding their own in these harsh lands, but things may well change — the Bach Viet, the intrepid masters of the forest, may be well advised to arm themselves in anticipation of conflict, should the new Chinese migrants prove to be a threat.
