Overall strategy[edit | edit source]
The infamous Greek pikeman. Like his Germanic counterpart, the Speutagardaz, the Phalangitai is meant for two things — amassing melee supremacy, and defending against enemy cavalry units, especially chariots — which Phalangitai will kill on contact. Phalangitai are thus useful as an early-game defensive force against melee units, but are very vulnerable to being destroyed by enemy ranged units, so some form of anti-ranged support is necessary to support them. Phalangitai are eventually replaced by the Roman era Pedites Defensorum, which has better overall parameters and a longer ranged attack.
