Faction Overview Strategic Overview History

By far and large, China could well be the most powerful faction of Age of Empires. Not only does China have interesting bonuses for booming, it too has plenty of interesting units with unique weapons, ranging from crossbows and cataphract cavalry to large warships at sea.

The only issue with China, however, is that it is rather weak in the early game, depending mainly on quirky but otherwise weak infantry, and a rather weak cavalry component comprising Light Cavalry, Lancers and Chariots. The few mercenaries that China can raise at moment's notice too aren't of any good value in a rush-based game - China trains mainly Man mercenaries in the early game which are best used for defence, not attack. China does receive four more in the Imperial Era - the Qiang ranged units, as well as Turkish melee cavalry - but this impedes China's ability to raid with cavalry.
