The Elamites have the Power of Resolve.
The true heirs of the Sumerians and Akkadians, the Elamites are the sole survivors of the many famines, environmental collapses and wars that have all but levelled the other Sumerian cities over the past thousand years. Still, as a general rule, until fairly recently, the trajectory of history has never favoured the Elamites, for while their position beyond the Zagros Mountains has helped them to keep the Kassites of Babylon and the chariot-driving Mitanni at bay, Elam has remained a loose confederation of peoples centred around the cities of Anshan and Susa. Unity under a strong king would then precede Elam attempting to move into the Fertile Crescent .... only to be rebuffed by the likes of local upstarts like Sargon of Akkad or Hammurabi of the Amorites, resulting in Elamite discord once more.
Nevertheless, their time may yet come, however: in recent centuries two powers now place pressure on the Fertile Crescent: the Mitanni and the Hittites, while the Semitic peoples of the south continue migrating north, keeping the region in a perpetual state of chaos and uncertainty, which has most certainly not favoured the two powers who continue to threaten Elam: Babylon in the south, and Assur, a rising power in the upper reaches of the Tigris. If the Elamites can stay above all this chaos, then perhaps the gates to old Sumeria can be thrown open ... and the Elamites can then take their rightful place as the lords of old Sumeria, once and for all. The heritage of the Sumerians may yet continue to be with them, but it is unknown just how much longer Elam may remain free and standing on the shoulders of giants, given that the rumours of war and new interlopers from the east continue to grow louder with each passing week.
